CRAIGHALL CASTLE
Mr and Mrs Lachlan Rattray, Craighall Castle, Rattray, Perthshire

Craighall Castle has been the family home of the Rattrays since 1533, and Lachie and Nicky Rattray and their young family are the twentieth generation to live here. Set in a spectacular position right on the edge of the Highlands, the castle is built on a promontory more than 200 feat above the River Ericht and the dramatic Craighall Gorge.

Furnished with a unique collection of family heirlooms and portraits dating back to the 16th century, Sir Walter Scott visited several times, staying with his great friend, Baron Clerk, and John Rattray, "the Golfing Surgeon", was born here in 1707.

Craighall Castle

Credited with writing the first official Rules of Golf in 1744, John Rattray was first winner of "the Silver Club" and, being styled "Captain of the Goff", was first Captain of the Honourable Company of Golfers of Edinburgh. Joining the Jacobite Army after the Battle of Prestonpans, he became Personal Surgeon to Bonnie Prince Charlie and was very nearly hanged for his devotion to the cause.
