Golf: Machrihanish, one of the Great Championship Courses in the world, with the daunting prospect of the Atlantic Ocean at the famous first hole. Another great links course at Dunaverty (Southend), where they still have electric fences around the greens to keep off the sheep. Should the fence be hit by the ball, the shot may be played again.There is also the beautiful nine hole course at Carradale and some great courses on the Isle of Arran, including the delightful 12 hole course at Blackwaterfoot. Arran is reached by ferry from Skipness.

Nairn, Lossiemouth (Old & New Moray), Grantown-on-Spey, and perhaps Scotland's most enjoyable inland course at Boat of Garten. It is certainly a supreme test of accurate golf as there is an individual setting for each hole which are often cut through birch wood or on moorland terrain. The course more than often echoes with the sound of golf balls clattering amongst the trees, but for all that it is a very beautiful course to play.

Golf: Kirkwall and Stromness - In mid-Summer, golf matches are organised at Kirkwall with starting times at mid-night. It is traditional for golfers to carry a hip flask of whisky to sustain them on their round. Kirkwall is 20 minutes by ferry from the Isle of Shapinsay.
